John does have his limits, although since Anthony was a bystander to Elly's mental slip (and it's sad that the good news for the day is that it's a short slip), it's not clear that this should mean anything about the long term Patterson-Blandthony relationship.I really should have taken a ruler to that door jamb in the 3rd panel.

No, this probably won't affect John's thinking all that much; he probably saw Anthony as a clueless sap who committed a minor and unintentional faux-pas. And, hey, Anthony might not even 'know' that he's the conductor of the Crazy Train; this would be just another of the long list of awful things that 'just happen'.
It is true that Anthony doesn't score very high on the clue-o-meter. Looking at his first marriage's breakdown, you have to figure that he's either a pathological liar or genuinely dense about how his behaviour affects those around him.
BTW, I promised that John would get some clue as to the true colours of the Boy In Beige, and that there would be a chewing-out. I never promised that John would do the chewing-out :-)

Let's review what we know about him:
a) He lives in a house his boss more or less gave him because he was too stupid to find one on his own and doesn't realize how pathetic that makes him look.
b) He built a gated community in his basement for his child to play in and would probably be baffled by anything like a darker implication.
c) His inability to understand that his conduct during and immediately after the Going After was revolting.
This tells me that he blunders through his pathetic life making horrible mistakes whose deeper implications never occur to him.

Love it. John shows a little guts for once, and the sisters double up on smacking still-clueless Anthony down. No "I have no home!" BS from him today; they headed that off at the pass.
No matter how much John likes Anthony, Anthony is, ultimately, an "outsider." He would be, even if he and Liz were married. The last thing a codependent wants is an "outsider" knowing the family's dirty secrets, *especially* that "outsider" is part of a "mutual admiration society" relationship. And the first reaction of a codependent when something happens and an "outsider" is present is to blame the outsider for causing it, whether or not that is true (as it partially was in this case).
